The Minnesota Timberwolves became the first team in the 2024 NBA Playoffs to advance to the semifinals with their 4-0 sweep of the Phoenix Suns in the first round. A big reason for that was the spectacular play of Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards who is making a claim for being one of the new faces of the NBA. Anthony Edwards’ style of play has led to quite a few comparisons to a young Michael Jordan.

During a recent interview with TNT Sports, Edwards’ Wolves teammate Mike Conley revealed why Edwards reminds him of a young MJ.

“He’s unbelievable. I think more than anything with him, it’s his mentality,” Conley said. “I’ve never met a guy or been teammates with a guy who believes more in himself than Anthony Edwards. I think he thinks he’s the best player ever to play the game, to walk on Earth, you can’t tell him any different.”

“He’s going to go out there, he has a mean streak to him, and what’s most impressive about him is the way he competes on the defensive end. Not a lot of guys have that ability to take over games on both sides of the floor. I’m just super excited to have him as my teammate and even learn from him just being around him.”

Timberwolves have a legit franchise superstar in Anthony Edwards

Not since the days of Kevin Garnett have the Timberwolves seen a generational talent suit up for them like Anthony Edwards. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Edwards has soared to the top of the NBA’s elite.

This past season, Edwards was named to his second consecutive All-Star appearance while averaging a career-high 25.9 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.3 steals with splits of 46.1 percent shooting from the field, 35.7 percent shooting from the three point line and 83.6 percent shooting from the free throw line.

Through the first four games of the NBA Playoffs, he was putting up 31.0 points per game, 8.0 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.0 steals with splits of 51.2 percent shooting from the field, 43.8 percent shooting from the three point line and 83.9 percent shooting from the free throw line.

When it comes to Michael Jordan comparisons, Anthony Edwards sure seems to elevate his game in the playoffs just like His Airness.

Wolves emerging as a legitimate title contender

Following the Timberwolves sweep of the Suns, many around the league have begun to take notice of them as a legitimate contender for the NBA championship. They have a legit superstar in Anthony Edwards. They have a supporting star in Karl-Anthony Towns. They have the size and the defense with Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels. They have the floor leader and vet in Mike Conley Jr.

They’ve gotten good bench production too with Naz Reid, Kyle Anderson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Monte Morris. The only uncertainty surrounding the Wolves moving forward is the status of head coach Chris Finch.

Finch took a fall on the sideline during Game 4 against the Suns when Conley crashed into him after being knocked off balance. Finch suffered a tendon injury and will undergo surgery. His status for the semifinals against the Denver Nuggets remains in doubt.
